3 - BAPTIZE

Series: The Commission

Matthew 28:18-20, And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” ————— Is baptism required for our salvation? Is there a right or wrong way to baptize? Is there a right or wrong time to be baptized? Over the years, there is certainly a variance in the beliefs about baptism. Of course, there is a proper way to approach these questions about baptism—look to the Scriptures and allow them to speak for themselves. ————— When we do that, it is incumbent upon us not to be driven by traditions, but rather by our obedience to the Word of God. As the old cliche goes, “I know there is a God, and I know I am not Him.” Thus, we must not add to or take away from the Bible teaches about all subjects, including baptism. ————— Join us this Sunday, as Frank dives into this third aspect of the Great Commission... to BAPTIZE... from Matthew 28:18-20.

Episode Notes

John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Acts 2:22-23, 2:37-38, 8:36-39, 9:17-19, 10:48, 16:14-15, 16:31-33

Big Idea: Set aside generations of traditions concerning baptism….

Understand what God does in you through your obedience.

Baptizo:  To dip, submerge, immerse with the idea of producing a permanent change.

1. Baptism symbolizes:  Christ's death.

Romans 6:1-3, What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

2. Baptism symbolizes:  Christ's burial.

Romans 6:4, We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

3. Baptism symbolizes:  Christ's resurrection.

Romans 6:5-11, For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death He died He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Next Step: If you haven’t yet…. Commit to be baptized….

Speak about baptism with the same words / context as Scripture.

Romans 6:12-14, Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
