Malachi 4:5-6, Conclusion of Malachi. Here we discuss the correlation between John the Baptist and the prophet Elijah and the coming of the day of the Lord.

Elijah and John, the Baptist

·       Matthew 11:14 - And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.

·       Each empowered by the Spirit of God for ministry – Luke 1:17

·       Each had to deal with wicked king and perverse queen – 1 Kings 19:1-2; Mark 6:18-19

·       Each received from God his daily provisions – 1 Kings 17:4,9; Mark 1:6

·       Each was courageous in rebuking sin – 1 Kings 21:20; Mark 6:18

·       Each lapsed into despondency when life was threatened – 1 Kings 19:4; Matthew 11:2-3

·       Elijah was taken into heaven without dying and John was the last of the martyred Old Testament prophets.


The signs of Elijah

·        1 Kings 17:1 – Prayed for the rains and dew to stop, and it was so

·        James 5:17 - Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.

·        1 Kings 17:14-16 – provided food and oil until the rains came

·        1 Kings 17:22-23 – brought the dead to life

·        2 Kings 1:10-12 – consumed his enemies with fire

·        1 Kings 18:41-45 – prayed for rain and it was so

·        James 5:18 - Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.

·        2 Kings 2:8 – Parted the waters
