A hot-air balloon goes up as you give up the weight that holds you down.  That's how it is when for a Christian. Christianity is more about giving up and less about going up. Going up is the result of giving up. When we give up, we go up.  When we go up, we look back and realize that it took giving up to go up.  Paul was willing to give up what he had in order to help Onesimus.  As he gave up, he found himself going up.  Here we are, almost 2,000 years later, reading a letter about what Paul was willing to give up.  This one statement captures Paul's heart:  "If he has wronged you at all, charge it to my account." Philemon 18  In this letter, Paul makes an appeal, set's an appointment and shares his appreciation.  It was all about helping someone who could do very little for him in return.

Episode Notes

THE APPEAL
“Accordingly, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do what is required, yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now a prisoner also for Christ Jesus— I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment.”
‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:8-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

When you make an appeal for someone else, you are following the example of Jesus Christ and giving up to help someone else go up.

THE APPOINTMENT
“I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart.”
‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me.”
‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

When you make an appointment for someone else, you are helping that individual get out of a mess as you share the greatest message at the same time!

THE APPRECIATION
“Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.”
‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We should learn to appreciate people for their heart before we pre-judge their actions.
