John 19:25-30 Introduction: On this last day of 2017, let’s look at the last words of Jesus spoken from the Cross. There is a sermon in each statement. We will focus on the last statement, It is finished!

Episode Notes

All seven: Father, forgive them. Today you will be with me in paradise. (Here is your son. Here is your mother.) I am thirsty. My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? It is Finished! Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.

1. God finishes what He begins.
Philippians 1:6 – …being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

2. Jesus finished the assignment the Father gave Him.
a. He lived a sinless life.
b. He was obedient to His Father.
c. He went to the Cross, to the grave, and into Heaven.
d. He will come again!

Matthew 24:44 – So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

3. Jesus is committed to finish God’s work in each Christian.
a. John 3:30 – He must become greater; I must become less.
b. Release every area of your life to Jesus.
c. “Do not rest on your laurels.”

Philippians 3:13 – Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.

Conclusion: My grandmother’s instruction to my mother and my aunt the day they were baptized was, “Pray and read God’s word every day.”
