Three Steps To Maturity

These verses contain two sets of three items, describing John’s readers as little children, Young men, and fathers. These three classifications are not about gender, physical age groups or spiritual stages. Rather, it seems that each group is a reference to all of John’s readers. For example, viewed as little children, they know their sins are forgiven. Viewed as fathers, they not only have a relationship with God, but they also have knowledge of God that comes from obedience to His commandments. Viewed as young men, they are strong. We should go through three steps to mature faith in Christ. Sadly most Christians don’t get beyond the child stage. These stages use male designations but they are comparisons for all of us.
