Sermon Series: The Lord’s Prayer In The Light of Christ’s Passion!
Sermon Text: John 17:15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.
Sermon Theme: “My Prayer Is That You Protect Them From The Evil One!”
I.N.R.I. The Last Passover ended Jesus and His disciples are still in the upper room. Lifting up His eyes Jesus prays to His Father. The hour has come for the Son to be glorified by crucifixion. The Son longs to glorify His Father’s good and gracious will to rescue sinners from all sins, death, the devil, and damnation in hell.
Prayer is the weapon Jesus teaches us to wield against the devil and all his hellish hordes. Breathing forth the Holy Spirit through His Word we are tenderly invited back to our Creator Father by His Son.
Satan masquerades as an angel of light, just as he had masqueraded as a serpent to our first parents. He lied. Lured them away from God the Father’s Word and loving care for them. Satan wants to pretend to be the father of mankind, but he is only a murderer and liar. Satan disdains human fleshiness seeking to slaughter as many as possible. Satan is a thief that stole creation by taking its head - mankind- captive by sin.
Now Jesus prays to the Father for us, John 17:15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.” False religions teach that salvation is escape from this creation. Jesus comes in our flesh to reclaim this creation - to make all things new again through His flesh and blood. He teaches us to pray, “Our Father, deliver us from evil.” “The evil one.” Echoed as He prays, “My Prayer Is That You Protect Them From the Evil One!”
What is the seventh request Jesus teaches us to make of our True Father in prayer? “Deliver us from evil” What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven.” Tonight we’ve whispered these words of Jesus again and again - prayer is the weapon Jesus gives us to withstand the unholy three - the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh.
This last petition summarizes it all - deliver us from the evil one - the devil. We cannot stand against the fallen angel Satan, but our Brother the God/Man has won the victory for us! We ask not for personal strength to stand, but for our Father’s rescue from Satan and all his evil work in our lives. Satan attacks our bodies with evils of sickness, plagues, cancers, and a myriad of other diseases. Satan attacks our souls plaguing consciences with guilt, shame, despair, depression, and a myriad of other oppressions. Satan isn’t content for a moment that our Heavenly Father gives us daily bread - he stirs up the evils of war, theft, robbery, tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts, and so on destroying all the possessions we need for daily life. He attacks our reputation with gossip, slander, false accusations, lies, and the like to make us ashamed to be in public.
Jesus doesn’t pray that the Father take us out of this battle. He prays the Father keep us from the evil one. How? Jesus takes all of Satan’s attacks on us into His own innocent flesh. In love He shoulders all evils that assail our bodies - He carries our infirmities. In love He shoulders all evils that attack our souls - He bears our sorrows. Our sins become Jesus’ sins and He carries them in His flesh to Calvary.
In love Jesus suffers all evils of possessions - He has no place to lay His head - His lifeless body will be laid in a borrowed tomb. In love Jesus becomes our Scapegoat - the evil of our sinful reputation is laid upon Him.
Baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection God the Father rescues us from death and the devil by His life giving Spirit.
We hear Jesus’ victory shout of triumph over the devil - “It is finished.” No one takes His life from Him - in love Jesus lays it down to reclaim us sinners from the evil one and bring us to our Father in heaven.
Branded by the Holy Spirit with Christ’s cross we know that we are God the Father’s children. Finally when our last hour comes - death draws near to frighten, Satan accuses - our Father will grant us a blessed end - not any easy death - but one by which He keeps us by His Spirit in His Word and Faith until we die. Taken from this valley of sorrow to our Father Himself - the evil one will never trouble us again.
We have whispered the Lord’s Prayer over and over tonight - perhaps when your last hour comes that is all you will be able to do - fear not. Jesus prays for our Father to deliver you. The Cross and empty tomb assure you that He has - go in peace - freed from the evil one washed in Christ’s blood! Amen.
