Rich Toward God

Series: Season of Pentecost 2019

Rev. Jake Allstaedt

"Take care," Jesus says in our Gospel text for today, "and be on guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." The abundance of possessions that we enjoy is not meant to be hoarded as if our lives were wrapped up in them. We do not seek to lay up treasures for ourselves here; we desire to be rich toward God. What does that mean? It means that Jesus made Himself poor to make us rich in Him. Through baptism, our lives are hidden with Jesus in God. We have the riches of Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Our life consists of Jesus, not in our stuff.
