Jesus Is in the Dividing Business

With all the division that already exists in our world (and that's to say nothing of the inner unrest we feel), wouldn't it make sense if Jesus came to do the opposite? He's supposed to bring peace, isn't He? "No," Jesus says in our Gospel text from Luke 12:51, "but rather division." Jesus is in the dividing business. He has come to divide us from everything that would separate us from Him, and that means we are not at peace in this world. The everlasting peace that Jesus gives will be experienced in full in the life to come.
