THE GOSPEL OF MARK - 26

Mark 8:34-38 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone
would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For
whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the
gospel’s will save it. 36 f For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit
his soul? 37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed
of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of
Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Mark 8:34a And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone
would come after me,

1. It’s going to COST YOU something to follow.
Mark 8:34a Let him deny himself …
Mark 8:34b … take up his cross…
Mark 8:34c …follow me.
Mark 8:34 (MSG) Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends
to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from
suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how.
Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Romans 10:9-10 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and
believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with
the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Mark 8:34 (MSG) Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends
to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from
suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how.

2. It’s going to COST YOU MORE if you don’t.

Mark 8:35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my
sake and the gospel's will save it.
Mark 8:35b …but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
Mark 8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
Mark 8:37 For what can a man give in return for his soul?
Revelation 22:12-13 (NLT) “Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to
repay all people according to their deeds. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First
and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
Revelation 22:16 (NLT) “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the
churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright
morning star.”
Revelation 22:20 (NLT) “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the
churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne.[a] I am the bright
morning star.”
Matthew 24:30-31 (NLT) And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will
appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the
earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and
great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with the mighty blast of a trumpet, and
they will gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the
earth and heaven.
Luke 12:40 (NLT) You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come
when least expected.”
Matthew 16:27 (ESV) For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory
of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 (NLT) We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still
living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. 16 For the
Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of
the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will
rise from their graves. 17 Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on

the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with
the Lord forever.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-4 (NLT) Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear
brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. 2 For you know quite well that the
day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. 3 When people
are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as
suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.
4 But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t
be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief.
Revelation 6:15-17 (NLT) Then everyone—the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals,
the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person—all hid themselves in the
caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 And they cried to the mountains and
the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and
from the wrath of the Lamb. 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is
able to survive?”
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 (NLT) And God will provide rest for you who are being
persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come
with his mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know
God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be
punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his
glorious power.
2 Timothy 4:1 (NLT) I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who
will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom:
Revelation 20:11-13, 15 (ESV) Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated
on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were
opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were
judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the
sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in
them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.
15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into
the lake of fire.

Colossians 2:13c-14 (ESV) having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the
record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it
to the cross.
Mark 8:38 (MSG) “If any of you are embarrassed over me and the way I’m leading you
when you get around your fickle and unfocused friends, know that you’ll be an even
greater embarrassment to the Son of Man when he arrives in all the splendor of God, his
Father, with an army of the holy angels.”

Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of
his Father with the holy angels.”
