What Greatness Looks Like

Mark 9:30-42 (ESV) They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he
did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The
Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And
when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying,
and were afraid to ask him.
Who Is the Greatest?
33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What
were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued
with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve.
And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he
said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and
whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us
38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and
we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”
39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will
be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us.
41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong
to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
Temptations to Sin
42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better
for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
● GOD KNOWS YOUR HEART

Mark 9:33-34 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked
them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way
they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.
Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of
his Father with the holy angels.”
Mark 10:35-38 (ESV) And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and
said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said
to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit,
one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do
not know what you are asking.
Mark 9:35 (ESV) And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If
anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
Matthew 6:1-5 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order
to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do
in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to
you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your
left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And
your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and
pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others.
Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
● GOD IS LOOKING FOR HUMILITY
1 Peter 5:3 (ESV) not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to
the flock.
Luke 7:28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the
one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
● GOD IS LOOKING FOR SERVANTS
Mark 9:36-37 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in
his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,
and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

Matthew 25:34-40 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are
blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the
world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I
was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick
and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will
answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and
give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and
clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King
will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my
brothers, you did it to me.’
Matthew 23:6-10 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the
synagogues 7 and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. 8 But
you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And
call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither
be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.
Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over
your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not
with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Mark 9:38-40 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your
name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”
39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will
be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us.
Mark 9:39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my
name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me.
Mark 9:41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because
you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
● GOD WANTS TO REWARD US
Galatians 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and
especially to those who are of the household of faith.
1 Corinthians 5:3-5 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you
or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am not aware of
anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5
Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will

bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the
heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.
