THE ONE JESUS LOVES – 2

The Gospel of John

(John 20:30-31 ESV) “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these [this book we’re about to read] are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

1. See Jesus for Who He really is – The Christ, the very Son of God.

(John 1:1 ESV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(Colossians 1:15 ESV) “He is the image of the invisible God…”

“We long to know who God is and what God thinks and does. In Jesus, his most personal Word, God has ’spoken’ to us in the most human way possible, giving us his innermost thoughts and heart, in deeds that are as profound as his words, and the believing human race has experienced deep help ever since.”  - Frederick Bruner

(John 1:2 ESV) He was in the beginning with God.

Triune: Consisting of three in one.

“A god understood, a god comprehended, is no god.” – Gerhard Tersteegen

2. See that life without Jesus, isn’t really life at all.

(John 1:3 ESV) All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

(Colossians 1:16 ESV) “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

“You move us to delight in praising you, for you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” – St. Augustine

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” – C.S. Lewis

(John 1:4-5 ESV) In him was life and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

(John 1:6-13 ESV) There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

3. See that Jesus became like us so we could become like Him.

(John 1:14-18 ESV) “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.
