The Forever Love of God
Mark 14:26-31 ESV
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said
to them, "You will all fall away, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep
will be scattered.' But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee." Peter said to
him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not." And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you,
this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." But he
said emphatically, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." And they all said the
same.
Mark 14:26a ESV And when they had sung a hymn...
1. God knows you best and still loves you most.
Hesed - his loving kindness
Psalms 136:1-5,16,23,26 ESV
1, Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
2, Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever.
3, Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for his steadfast love endures forever;
4, to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever;
5, to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures
forever;
16, to him who led his people through the wilderness, for his steadfast love endures
forever;
23, It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures
forever;
26, Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.
● His steadfast love is as eternal as HE IS HIMSELF!
● Inherit in His love is His desire to SHARE IT WITH US.
2. God holds the future in His hands.
Mark 14:27 ESV And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will
strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’”
Zechariah 13:7 ESV “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who
stands next to me,” declares the Lord of hosts. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep
will be scattered...”
● All the disciples would fall away:
Mark 14:27a ESV And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away...”
● He would be struck by God:
Mark 14:27b ESV “...for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep
will be scattered.’”
Isaiah 53:4-5 NIV Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we
considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced
for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought
us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:4-5 MSG But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—our disfigurements, all
the things wrong with us. We thought he brought it on himself, that God was
punishing him for his own failures. But it was our sins that did that to him, that
ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins! He took the punishment, and that made us
whole. Through his bruises we get healed.
● He would be raised from the dead:
Mark 14:28a ESV “But after I am raised up...
● He would meet the disciples in Galilee:
Mark 14:28b ESV “...I will go before you to Galilee.”
● Peter would 3 times that night deny that he knew Jesus:
Mark 14:30 ESV And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night, before
the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times."
Luke 22:23-24 ESV And they began to question one another, which of them it could be
who was going to do this. A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was
to be regarded as the greatest.
Luke 22:31 ESV “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might
sift you like wheat...”
Luke 22:32 ESV “but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you
have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
Luke 22:33 ESV Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and
to death."
Mark 14:31 ESV But he said emphatically, "If I must die with you, I will not deny
you." And they all said the same.
Mark 14:29 ESV Peter said to him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not."
Proverbs 16:18 KJV Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 ESV Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take
heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is
faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation
he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
3. Pray like God loves you, has the future in His hands and your life
depends on it.
● When we are not prayerful, we are prideful.
Mark 14:32-42 ESV And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his
disciples, "Sit here while I pray." And he took with him Peter and James and John, and
began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, "My soul is very
sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch." And going a little farther, he fell on
the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he
said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not
what I will, but what you will." And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to
Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that
you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and
found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to
answer him. And he came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and
taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the
hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."
Mark 14:32 ESV And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his
disciples, "Sit here while I pray."
Hebrews 5:7a NIV During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and
petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death...
Mark 14:35a ESV And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed...
Mark 14:33-34a ESV And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to
be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, "My soul is very
sorrowful, even to death."
Luke 22:44 ESV And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly;
“It does not matter how great the pressure is. What really matters is where the pressure
lies – whether it comes between you and God, or whether it presses you nearer His
heart.” - Hudson Taylor
Luke 22:44 ESV And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat
became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
● Prayer strengthens us
Luke 22:43 ESV And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
Mark 1:13 ESV And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And
he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
Mark 14:37-38 ESV And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter,
"Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may
not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
● Prayer helps us fight the enemy
Luke 22:53b ESV “But this is your [the] hour, and the power of [the] darkness."
1 Peter 5:8 NLT Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls
around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of
wickedness in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:18 NIV
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this
in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
● Prayer is the key to knowing and doing God’s will
Mark 14:36 ESV And he said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove
this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."
