Mark 14:43b ESV
…and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes
and the elders.
John 18:3 ESV
So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests
and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
Mark 14:44 ESV
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I will kiss is the man. Seize
him and lead him away under guard."
Mark 14:45a ESV
And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, "Rabbi! [Rabbi]”
Mark 14:45b ESV And he kissed him.
John 18:4-5a ESV Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward
and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus said to them, "I am he."
John 18:6 ESV When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the
ground.
Proverbs 18:10 ESV The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs
into it and is safe.
Numbers 6:24 NLT May the LORD bless you and protect you.

Numbers 6:27 ESV "So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will
bless them."

John 18:6-8 ESV When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the
ground. So he asked them again, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of
Nazareth." Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men
go."
Mark 14:46-47 ESV And they laid hands on him and seized him. But one of those who
stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
John 18:10-11 ESV Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high
priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) So Jesus
said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father
has given me?"
Luke 22:51 ESV But Jesus said, "No more of this!" And he touched his ear and
healed him.
Mark 14:48-49 ESV And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out as against a robber,
with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple
teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled."
Mark 14:50 ESV And they all left him and fled.
Mark 14:51-52 ESV And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about
his body. And they seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Isaiah 61:10 ESV I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he
has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of
righteousness…
Deuteronomy 16:18-20 NIV
Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the LORD your God is
giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show
partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the
words of the righteous. Follow justice and justice alone.
5 THINGS DENIED TO JESUS:
1. The court was to have an arraignment before the trial…never happened.
2. No trial was to be conducted at night…His was.
3. No trial was to be conducted in secret…His was.

4. Witnesses were to give the time and place of the crime…didn’t happen.
5. Before condemning a man the judges were to fast for a day…they didn’t.
Mark 14:53 ESV
And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the
scribes came together.
John 18:12-13 ESV
So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus
and bound him. First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,
who was high priest that year.
John 18:19 ESV
The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
John 18:20-21 ESV
Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in
synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in
secret. Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they
know what I said."
John 18:22-24 ESV
When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his
hand, saying, "Is that how you answer the high priest?" Jesus answered him, "If what I
said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike
me?" Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Mark 14:54 ESV
And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And
he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire.
Mark 14:55 ESV
Now the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking testimony against Jesus to
put him to death, but they found none.
Mark 14:56-59 ESV
For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. And
some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, "We heard him say, 'I will
destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not
made with hands.'" Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.

Mark 14:60 ESV
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to
make? What is it that these men testify against you?"
Mark 14:61a ESV
But he remained silent and made no answer.
Mark 14:61b ESV
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"
Matthew 26:63 ESV
But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living
God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
Mark 14:62a ESV
And Jesus said, "I am."
Mark 14:62 ESV
And Jesus said, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of
Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."
Mark 14:63-64 ESV
And the high priest tore his garments and said, "What further witnesses do we need?
You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?" And they all condemned him as
deserving death.
Mark 14:65 ESV
And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him,
"Prophesy!" And the guards received him with blows.
Luke 22:64-65 ESV
They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?"
And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him.
Mark 14:65b NLT
And the guards slapped him as they took him away.

1. He was innocent

2. We are guilty

Romans 3:10 NIV As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one;”
Romans 3:23 NIV for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
Mark 14:66-72 ESV And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of
the high priest came, and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said,
“You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor
understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed.
And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is
one of them.” But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to
Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” But he began to invoke a
curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” And
immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had
said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he
broke down and wept.
