THE GOSPEL OF MARK - 33
So Close And Yet So Far
Mark 10:17-22 ESV And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt
before him and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 And
Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You
know the commandments: 'Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not
bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" 20 And he said to
him, "Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth." 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved
him, and said to him, "You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22 Disheartened by the
saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Mark 10:17 ESV And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt
before him and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Mark 10:30 ESV who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and
brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the
age to come eternal life.
John 17:3 NIV Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom you have sent.
1 John 5:20 NIV We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us
understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by
being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Mark 10:17 ESV And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt
before him and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Mark 10:17c ESV …and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal
life?”
Mark 10:18 MEV He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good, except
God alone.
Mark 10:19 ESV You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, Do not commit
adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and
mother.'"
Mark 10:20 ESV And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth."
Galatians 3:10-11 NLT But those who depend on the law to make them right with God
are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe
and obey ALL THE COMMANDS that are written in God’s Book of the Law.” 11 So it is
clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the
Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
Isaiah 64:6 NLT We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our
righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and
fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
Philippians 3:3-7 NLT For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are
truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence
in human effort, 4 though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could.
Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more! 5 I
was circumcised when I was eight days old. I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a
member of the tribe of Benjamin—a real Hebrew if there ever was one! I was a member
of the Pharisees, who demand the strictest obedience to the Jewish law. 6 I was so
zealous that I harshly persecuted the church. And as for righteousness, I obeyed the
law without fault. 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them
worthless because of what Christ has done.
Philippians 3:8 MSG The very credentials these people are waving around as
something special, I’m tearing up and throwing out with the trash—along with everything
else I used to take credit for. And why? Because of Christ. Yes, all the things I once
thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of
knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for
me is insignificant—dog dung. I’ve dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace
Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of
righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind
that comes from trusting Christ—God’s righteousness.
Mark 10:21 ESV And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "You lack one
thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; and come, follow me."
Romans 10:9-10 NIV If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in
your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your
heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your
faith and are saved.
Mark 10:22 ESV Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great
possessions.
Luke 18:23 ESV But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was
extremely rich.
Luke 18:24 NKJV And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How
hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!
Mark 10:23-31 ESV And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it
will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples
were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to
enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were exceedingly
astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and
said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus
said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or
mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not
receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers
and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But
many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
