Peace, Be Still

Mark 4:35-41 (ESV) On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Jesus never said we would have a storm-free life.

John 16:33 (ESV) I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Mark 4:36 (ESV) And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.

This is not a fairy tale, it is a real story about a real Jesus who has real power when you’re facing the real storms of life!

Mark 4:37 (ESV) And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.

Mark 4:38 (ESV) But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Mark 4:39 (ESV) And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

When tornadic winds couldn’t wake Him, Jesus was stirred by the cries of his people.

Colossians 3:15 (ESV)
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

Peace is not the absence of something, it’s the presence of Someone.

Mark 4:40 (ESV) He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Mark 4:41 (ESV) And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Mark 4:40 (ESV) He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”

Mark 4:40b (ESV) “Have you still no faith?”

The One who calms the raging seas, calms the storms in me.

Romans 8:31-32 (ESV) What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be[a] against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
