THE GOSPEL OF MARK - 34
Not So with You
Philippians 2:5-7 ESV Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in
Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count
equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the
form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Mark 10:32 ESV
And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking
ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were
afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to
happen to him,
Mark 10:33-34 ESV
saying, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be
delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn
him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him
and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise."
Mark 10:35-37 ESV
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to
him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."
36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they
said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in
your glory.”
Matthew 20:20-24 NIV Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus
with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. 21 “What is it you
want?” he asked.
She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right
and the other at your left in your kingdom.” 22 “You don’t know what you
are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to
drink?” “We can,” they answered.
23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my
right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom
they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two
brothers.
Matthew 20:25-28 NIV Jesus called them together and said, “You know
that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials
exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to
become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be
first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be
served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
1. The world we live in is all about position and power, the Kingdom of God is about service and sacrifice.
· Why is something Jesus so clearly said so frequently ignored and
avoided?
· Everyone has an excuse.
Luke 14:16-18 NKJV Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great
supper and invited many, 17 and sent his servant at supper time to say to
those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ 18 But they all
with one accord began to make excuses.
2. There are three common excuses for not doing what we know God
wants us to do.
Luke 14:18 The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I
must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’
· Too busy: I just don’t have the time.
Luke 14:19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am
going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’
· Have to work: I have too much to do.
Luke 14:20 Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot
come.’
· Family demands: I have a lot going on at home.
3. There is a big difference between a volunteer and a servant.
· Volunteering is an action. Serving is an attitude.
· Volunteers focus on what they give. Servants focus on
what Jesus
what Jesus
gave.
· Volunteers often keep score. Servants make sacrifices.
· Volunteers are time sensitive. Servants are need sensitive.
· Volunteering makes them look good. Serving makes God look good.
· Volunteering is about convenience. Serving is about commitment.
· Volunteering makes people feel superior. Servants learn humility.
· Volunteers are good at me. Servants are good at we.
Mark 10:38 ESV
38 Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able
to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I
am baptized?"
Mark 10:38-39 ESV
38 Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able
to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I
am baptized?" 39 And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to
them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I
am baptized, you will be baptized,
Mark 10:40 ESV
but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those
for whom it has been prepared."
2 Corinthians 4:17 NIV
For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory
that far outweighs them all.
Mark 10:41 ESV
And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.
Mark 10:42-44 ESV
And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who
are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones
exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever
would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be
first among you must be slave of all.
Mark 10:44 ESV
and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
Mark 10:45 ESV
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give
his life as a ransom for many."
