THE GOSPEL OF MARK - 31

Jesus’ Teaching on Divorce

Mark 10:1 (ESV) And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the
Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught
them.

Mark 10:2 (ESV) And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for
a man to divorce his wife?”

Mark 10:3-5 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses
allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” 5 And Jesus said to
them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

Deuteronomy 24:1-4 (ESV) “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she
finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes
her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and
she departs out of his house, 2 and if she goes and becomes another man's wife, 3 and
the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand
and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, 4
then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife,
after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the LORD. And you shall not
bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance.

Mark 10:6-9 (ESV) But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and
female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8
and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What
therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Mark 10:10-12 (ESV) And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11
And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery
against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits
adultery.”

Matthew 19:3-12 (ESV) And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it
lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?”

4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made
them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his
mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no
longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man
separate.”
7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce
and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses
allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries
another, commits adultery.”
10 The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to
marry.”
11 But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it
is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs
who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made
themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to
receive this receive it.”

The truth about marriage:

• God CREATED marriage, so he gets to DEFINE it.

• Marriage is not just a COMMITMENT between two people; it is the FUSION of two parts to
make one whole.

The truth about divorce:

•BIBLICAL DIVORCE can only happen because of sexual unfaithfulness or desertion by a non-
Christian.

The truth about all of us:

• None of us will get to heaven because of what we have DONE.

• All of us have at least one page in the Bible that we didn’t GET RIGHT.

Romans 3:9-18 (ESV) What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we
have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not
even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way
of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Romans 3:19-20 (ESV) Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who
are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be
held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in
his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:21-24 (ESV) But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart
from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness
of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a
gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

The truth about the cross:

• The cross brings grace and mercy, not what I DESERVE.

• The cross allows OBEDIENCE to start today.
