THE GOSPEL OF MARK - 39
Is Jesus In Charge of Your Life?

Mark 1:22 NIV
22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had
authority, not as the teachers of the law.

Mark 1:27 NIV
27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new
teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey
him.”

Mark 2:5 NIV
5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are
forgiven.”

Mark 2:10 NIV
10But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So
he said to the man,

John 1:12 NIV
12Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to
become children of God—

John 17:2 NIV
2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those
you have given him.

John 10:17-18 NIV
17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.
18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it
down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

John 5:22 NLT
22In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute
authority to judge,

Matthew 28:18 NIV
18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been
given to me.

Ephesians 1:20-22 NIV
20he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in
the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every
name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And
God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for
the church,

Revelation 11:15 ESV Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud
voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our
Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

1. Only one QUESTION remained

Mark 11:27 ESV
27And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief
priests and the scribes and the elders came to him,

Mark 11:28 ESV
28and they said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you
this authority to do them?"

Their question in our language today:
● Who do you think YOU ARE?
● What gives you the right to CHANGE my life?

Mark 11:29 ESV
29Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by
what authority I do these things.

Mark 11:30-33 ESV
30Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me." 31And they

discussed it with one another, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then
did you not believe him?' 32But shall we say, 'From man'?"—they were afraid of the
people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. 33So they answered Jesus, "We
do not know."

2. A STORY that sums it all up

Mark 12:1 ESV
1And he began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard and put a
fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to
tenants and went into another country.

Mark 12:2-5 ESV
2When the season came, (harvest) he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them
some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3And they took him and beat him and sent him away
empty-handed. 4Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the
head and treated him shamefully. 5And he sent another, and him they killed. And so
with many others: some they beat, and some they killed.

Mark 12:6 ESV
6He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, 'They will
respect my son.'

Mark 12:7-8 ESV
7But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the
inheritance will be ours.' 8And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the
vineyard.

Mark 12:9 ESV
9What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give
the vineyard to others.
Matthew 21:40-41 ESV
40When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"
41They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the
vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons."
Mark 12:9 ESV
9What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give

the vineyard to others.

The owner gave them:
● Everything they needed for SUCCESS.
● An incredible amount of PATIENCE and PERSISTENCE.
● His only son as a FINAL PLEA.
● No other OPTIONS.

3. The QUESTION we are left with today

Acts 4:11-12 ESV
11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the
cornerstone. 12And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under
heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Mark 12:10-11 ESV
10Have you not read this Scripture: "'The stone that the builders rejected has become
the cornerstone; 11this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"

Mark 12:12 ESV
12And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he
had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

● What, or who, is my CORNERSTONE?
