Episode Notes

Mark 9:42-50
Genesis 4:7 (NLT) You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do
what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you
must subdue it and be its master.”

Colossians 3:5-6 (NLT) So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have
nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy,
for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. 6 Because of these
sins, the anger of God is coming.

Do you mortify? Do you make it your daily work? Be always at it whilst you live; cease
not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you.
- John Owen, The Mortification of Sin

Mark 9:42-50
42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better
for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled
than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes
you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be
thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to
enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,
48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49 For everyone will be
salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it
salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

1. A radical CONCERN for others

Mark 9:42 ESV “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it
would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were
thrown into the sea.

Matthew 18:2-4 NLT
2 Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. 3 Then he said, “I tell you
the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never
get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child
is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 18:6-7 NLT But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall
into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and
be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 “What sorrow awaits the world, because it tempts
people to sin. Temptations are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does
the tempting.

Romans 14:23 NLT
But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning
if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything
you believe is not right, you are sinning.

2. A radical CONSECRATION of ourselves

Mark 9:43 ESV
43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled
than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.

Mark 9:45 ESV
45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than
with two feet to be thrown into hell.
Mark 9:47 ESV
47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom
of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell,

Mark 7:20-21 NLT
20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. 21 For from within,
out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,

Mark 9:43 ESV …with two hands to go to hell
Mark 9:45 ESV ….with two feet to be thrown into hell.
Mark 9:47 ESV ….with two eyes to be thrown into hell,

2 Corinthians 13:5 ESV Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test
yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in
you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Mark 9:48 ESV where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.;

Mark 9:49 ESV For everyone will be salted with fire.
Romans 12:1 NIV Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to
offer your bodies as a living sacrifice (what kind?), holy and pleasing to God—this is your
true and proper worship.

Mark 9:50 ESV Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty
again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."
What things cause “me” to stumble?

1 Peter 5:8-9 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like
a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that
the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the
world.

James 1:4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and
complete, lacking in nothing.

● Different LURES catch different FISH.

James 1:14-15 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own
desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully
grown brings forth death.

Proverbs 22:3 The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and
suffer for it.

● When tempted by an internal desire, RUN.

2 Timothy 2:22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and
peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is
outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

● When tempted by an external trial, STAND FIRM.
