Mark 12:13-17 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his
words.
14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You
aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way
of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
15 Should
we pay or shouldn’t we?”
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked.
“Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”
16 They brought the coin, and he asked them,
“Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”
And they were amazed at him.
· Heaven will be a THEOCRACY, not a DEMOCRACY.
“There are legitimate spheres of different authorities in our life, an allegiance to
one does not necessarily mean disloyalty to the other.” -Mark Strauss
Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so
that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock
and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Their minds would’ve immediately went to page one
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
· One of our CITIZENSHIPS WILL always TRUMP the other.
Romans 13:1-7 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no
authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been
established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling
against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on
themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do
wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right
and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good.
But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are
God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
5 Therefore, it is
necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also
as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their
full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay
taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
· How we DISPLAY our PASSIONS is far more important than what our
PASSIONS are.
· Choose to die on the HILL that JESUS chose.
Death
Mark 12:18-24 Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a
question. 19 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and
leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for
his brother. 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without
leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no
child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of
all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven
were married to her?”
Deuteronomy 25:5-10 If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his
widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry
her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her. 6 The first son she bears shall carry on
the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.7
However, if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife, she shall go to the elders at
the town gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in
Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to me.” 8 Then the elders of his town
shall summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying, “I do not want to marry her,” 9
his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his
sandals, spit in his face and say, “This is what is done to the man who will not build up his
brother’s family line.” 10 That man’s line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the
Unsandaled.
Mark 12:24-27 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or
the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage;
they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in
the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the
God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not the God of the
dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!
Since the afterlife is real:
· Our hope of heaven TRUMPS the HYPE of today.
· Heaven will be far GREATER than whatever your GREATEST is now.
