ASK BIG

Psalm 65:11 (NKJV) You crown the year with Your goodness,

And Your paths drip with abundance.

Psalm 119:68a (ESV) You are good and you do good…

Ephesians 3:20 (MSG) God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 (ESV) Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm[b] so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.

1 Chronicles 4:9a (ESV) Jabez was more honorable than his brothers…

(slide only) Jabez was one who was more noteworthy, more impressive, more weighty, in his community than his brothers, ironically his mother had named him Jabez, which sounds like the word for “pain” because when he was born she said I am in pain and anguish.

4 Things Jabez Prayed:

1.  He prayed for God to bless him.

1 Chronicles 4:10a (ESV) Jabez called upon the God of Israel saying, “Oh that you would bless me… (NASB adds) indeed…

1 Chronicles 4:6-7 (ESV) Naarah bore him Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were the sons of Naarah. 7 The sons of Helah: Zereth, Izhar, and Ethnan…

1 Chronicles 4:11-12 (ESV) Chelub, the brother of Shuhah, fathered Mehir, who fathered Eshton. 12 Eshton fathered Beth-rapha, Paseah, and Tehinnah, the father of Ir-nahash. These are the men of Recah.

2.  He prayed that God would enlarge his influence.

1 Chronicles 4:10b (ESV) …and enlarge my border…

1 Chronicles 2:55a (ESV) The clans also of the scribes that lived at Jabez…

3.  He prayed for God to empower him.

1 Chronicles 4:10c (ESV) …and that your hand might be with me…

Acts 11:21 (ESV) And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.

Ezra 7:6d (ESV) and the king granted him all that he asked, for the hand of the Lord was on him.

Ezra 7:28d (ESV) I took courage, for the hand of the Lord my God was on me…

4.  He prays for God to protect him.

1 Chronicles 4:10d (ESV) …and that you would keep me from harm[a] so that it might not bring me pain!”

1 Chronicles 4:10e (ESV) And God granted what he asked.

1 Chronicles 4:10d (NLT) …and keep me from all trouble and pain!”

1 Chronicles 4:10d (MSG) …And provide your personal protection—don’t let evil hurt me.”
