THE GOSPEL OF MARK - 51
An Empty Tomb For Empty Lives

Mark 16:1-8 ESV
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and
Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first
day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying
to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?" And
looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back--it was very large. And
entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white
robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus
of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they
laid him. But go, tell his disciples
and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told
you." And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had
seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

1. The RESURRECTION was as impossible to them as it
is to us.

Mark 16:6 ESV
And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was
crucified. He has risen [He has been raised]; he is not here. See the place where they
laid him.”
Matthew 27:57 ESV
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also
was a disciple of Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1-8 NIV
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received
and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold
firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I
received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third
dayaccording to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.
After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time,

most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to
James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one
abnormally born.
1 Corinthians 15:14-20a NIV
And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More
than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified
about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the
dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised
either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have
hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been
raised from the dead,
At the Cross:
Mark 15:40 ESV
There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary
Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
At the Grave:
Mark 15:47 ESV
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
At the Empty Tomb:
Mark 16:1 ESV
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and
Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.

2. The GOSPEL was a message of grace to them and to
us.

Mark 16:7 ESV
“But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will
see him, just as he told you.”
Mark 16:7 ESV

white robe, and they were alarmed.

seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.

3. The MISSION was as imperative to them as it should
be to us.

Mark 16:7a ESV
But go, tell his disciples and Peter...
Mark 16:15 ESV
And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole
creation.”

Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is
going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you." So they
departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his
disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" And they came up
and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be
afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me."
