Pastor Daniel Lee
While not obligatory, fasting is a powerful tool to open up our hearts and character to the work of the Holy Spirit. We will explore various passages to see how fasting raises our spiritual sensitivity, helps fight against our flesh, and directs our focus towards God with humility.
Episode Notes
- Biblical Fasting – Voluntary forgoing of food or some other “filling” for some limited time, for an express spiritual purpose
- Fasting to fuel longing
- Psalm 73:25-26
- “Fasting confirms our utter dependence upon God by finding in him a source of sustenance beyond food. Through it, we learn by experience that God’s word to us is a life substance, that it is not food (“bread”) alone that gives life, but also the words that proceed from the mouth of God. We learn that we too have meat to eat that the world does not know about. Fasting unto our Lord is therefore feasting–feasting on him and on doing his will.” – Dallas Willard
- Fasting to fight sin
- Luke 14:18-20
- Deut. 8:2-3
- 1 Cor. 9:27
- Joel 2:12-13
- Fasting to receive God’s grace and strength
- Matt. 6:16-18
- Col. 2:20-23
- Acts 13:2-3
