Frank Foreman
As we arrive at the final stop on our five-week series of messages on the purpose of the church, we conclude with the emphasis on discipleship and growth that should be evidenced not only in the the life of a Christian, but in the whole body of Christ collectively as the church. ————— This Sunday morning, Frank shares this final message on the Great Commission of Christ in Matthew 28:18-20, with a focus on the challenge Christ gives to us to not only mature in faith, but also to assist and guide others as they grow to maturity in faith through discipleship.
Episode Notes
The purpose of the church is to glorify our Lord.
Romans 11:36, For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.
Glory: The most important, significant, prominent, priority in our lives…
That is what we hold in the position of glory.
Matthew 28:18-20, And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Big Idea: We glorify our Lord by training God’s people through discipleship.
Discipleship: Older Christians mentoring younger Christians.
Practically: How we live.
Intellectually: What we teach.
May your life speak louder than your words.
2nd Timothy 1:2-7, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
1. Point to your example.
2nd Timothy 1:13-14, Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
2nd Timothy 2:1-2, You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
2nd Timothy 3:10a, You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life….
2. Point to God’s Word.
2nd Timothy 2:15, Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the Word of Truth.
2nd Timothy 3:14-15, But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the Sacred Writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
2nd Timothy 3:16-17, All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
