The Power and Compassion of Jesus

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

June 27, 2021
Frank Foreman

One thing is clear from Jesus' ministry was that no matter how important it was for him to share His message, teach His disciples, or accomplish His Father's will, He didn't ignore the opportunity to touch people's lives who came to Him in faith. ---------- Such is the case in the narrative that Frank will be preaching on this Sunday--a story within a story, if you will. A father pleading for his daughter's life that Jesus might touch her and heal her; a woman, afflicted for years with a physical burden imagines through her faith that simply touching His garments might bring relief and healing to her. Two people who probably never met one another but who shared and clung to a shred of hope for healing through His healing power. ---------- Ironically, it is the same hope that inspires and assures us. We have all been in the same circumstance, afflicted with a hopeless situation, clinging to a faith and belief that redemption and healing comes through the Savior.

Episode Notes

Hebrews 2:14-15, Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Job 18:14, …the king of terrors

Psalm 55:4, …terrors of death

Romans 5:12, Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned…

John 11:25-26, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die.

BIG IDEA:  Jesus displayed qualities in His everyday life that are great examples for every Christian.

1.  Jesus was accessible (Mark 5:21-24)

John 3:1-2, Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a Teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with Him.”

  • Never be so separated that people can’t approach you.

Matthew 25:40, And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you did it to Me.”

2.  Jesus was interruptible (Mark 5:25-34)

Leviticus 15:25, …all the days of the discharge she shall continue in uncleanness.

  • Never be too busy to care for those in need.

3.  Jesus was unflappable (Mark 5:35-40)

4.  Jesus was charitable (Mark 5:41-43)

Luke 19:10, For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  • Never be so short-sighted that you miss the greatest need.

1st Corinthians 15:1-4, Now I would remind you, brothers, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the Word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…

NEXT STEP: Tell of Jesus’ power…  Act on Jesus’ compassion.

Romans 8:11, If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
