The seventh sermon in the series of messages on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7. In His teaching, Jesus clearly teaches that as followers of Christ, reflecting his character, we are called to live above the expectations of the world ... that we are called to meet more than the minimum requirements.

Episode Notes

Matthew 7:1-6 ...  Judge not, that you be not judged.  For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.  Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?  Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.  Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

John 7:24 ... Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.

Jesus said, "Don’t JUDGE..." and "Judge RIGHTLY ..."  What is He saying?

"Anytime a person invents a system of MORALITY, they then become the JUDGE that sits on the throne of that system."

1.  Wrong judgment demonstrates a wrong view of GOD

Verse 1 ...  Judge not, that you be not judged.

2.  Wrong judgment demonstrates a wrong view of OTHERS

Verse 2 ... For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.

3.  Wrong judgment demonstrates a wrong view of YOURSELF

Verses 3-5 ...

Challenge:  Judge RIGHTLY
  • Judge with SCRIPTURE
2nd Timothy 3:16-17 ... All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  • Judge with GENTLENESS
Galatians 6:1 ... Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.  Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

  • Judge with PURITY
Psalm 51:10-13 ... Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
