Matthew 9:36-38, When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” ————— Building one’s character is not a sudden thing. It does not happen overnight. The term “building character” gives us an idea that it happens over time, with the hopefully strong foundation in truth and faithfulness being laid in the believer’s life. After that foundation is laid, the building up of morals, values, thoughts, actions, etc. are laid on top of it.

Episode Notes

Matthew 9:36-38, When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Isaiah 53:6, All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Big Idea:  Look beyond yourself and bless.

1.  Older guys lead the younger guys.

1st Peter 5:1-4, So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

  • Be willing.

  • Be eager.

  • Be examples.

Hebrews 13:17, Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

2.  Younger guys follow the older guys.

1st Peter 5:5-11, Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To Him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

  • Be humble.

  • Be confident.

  • Be watchful.

Hebrews 13:7, Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the Word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.

Next Step:  Avoid short cuts to Christian maturity… Patiently allow God’s Word to change your heart and shape your character.

1st Peter 5:12-14, By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
