Take Off the Grave Clothes
Series: I AM
May 10, 2020
Frank Foreman
Frank Foreman continues our series of messages this week based on the seven affirmative statements Jesus makes about Himself in the Gospel of John. He begins each of these unique with the statement "I Am." This week, we look at his linked statements from John 11 ... I Am the Resurrection and the Life. ------------- Of course, these statements Jesus makes were not simply affirmations of His character. They tied directly to the personal name of God from the Old Testament (I Am that I Am). In each of these statements, He profoundly ties His characteristics to the Father and declares His divine nature. ------------- We are so grateful you have come to worship with us today. From all of us on the leadership team of the church, we hope you experience God's glory and presence through our worship today. Please be encouraged to join in the singing when you know the songs and participate thoroughly in our worship together. --------------- If you would like to follow along with our Live Worship featuring sermon notes and other helpful links, it is available through the Bible.com App. You can simply use this link to be taken directly to it: http://bible.com/events/12049191
Episode Notes
1. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life.
John 11:25, Jesus said to her, “I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die.”
1st John 5:11-12, And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
1st Corinthians 15:53-57, For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Do you believe this?
John 11:26, “...Do you believe this?”
Matthew 16:16
1st Corinthians 15:17-19, And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
3. Take off the grave clothes.
John 11:44, The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them. “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Galatians 3:27, For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Colossians 3:12-13, Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
BIG IDEA:
Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good... He came to make dead people live.
Galatians 2:20, I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Romans 6:3-4, Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
NEXT STEP:
Follow these simple and clear steps straight from Scripture:
Acts 3:19, Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out...
Acts 19:18, Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.
Acts 22:16, And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name.
