What would you ask for if you could have whatever you wanted? Would it take you some time to decide or are you ready should the question ever arise? Would you request be for material blessings? Good fortune? Long life? -------- Such was the question posed to Solomon when he became king. We learn a lot about his character and heart in the prayer he offers to God. This Sunday, Frank looks at this text in our current series of messages on prayer.

Episode Notes

Philippians 2:3-4, Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Big Idea:  Seek wisdom for God’s glory and for the good of others.

1.  Express sincere gratitude.

1st Kings 3:6, And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward You. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day.

1st Thessalonians 5:16-18, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Psalm 30:4-5, Sing praises to the LORD, O you His saints, and give thanks to His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment, and His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. (12b) O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever!

James 1:17a, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights….

2.  Display genuine humility.

1st Kings 3:7-8, And now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.

James 4:6b, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

1st Peter 3:8, Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.

Matthew 23:11-12, The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

3.  Request Godly wisdom.

1st Kings 3:9, Give Your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern Your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this Your great people?”

2nd Chronicles 1:10, Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can govern this people of Yours, which is so great?”

1st Corinthians 3:19-20, For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

Colossians 3:16, Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

James 1:5, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Proverbs 2:1-6, My son, if you receive My words and treasure up My commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

Next Step:  Fear God…. Keep His commandments…. Return to wisdom.
