Make Disciples
Series: Church on Purpose
June 21, 2020
Frank Foreman
In this third week, Frank opens up the book of Matthew and focuses in on the Great Commission in Matthew 28. In so doing, we will together study the purpose we have as a church family to commit ourselves to Evangelism, recognizing what it truly is and our collective and individual role in the task of "making disciples."
Episode Notes
PAUSE: What is the greatest need you could help meet in someone’s life?
Matthew 28:19-20, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
BIG IDEA
Evangelism means to “MAKE DISCIPLES” ... Through evangelism we COMMUNICATE God’s Word.
DISCIPLE: A disciple is a learner, a pupil, one who follows one's teachings ... A disciple was not only a pupil, they are spoken of as imitators of their teacher.
A couple of foundational principles:
- Evangelism begins and ends with prayer... We ask God for a MIRACLE.
- Evangelism is active not passive... GO and make.
PAUSE: How does this picture of evangelism change your thinking?
Communicating the COST of discipleship is part of evangelism:
Luke 9:23-26, And He said to all, “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”
1. DENY self.
Philippians 3:7-8, But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ...
2. TAKE UP cross daily.
John 19:17, So they took Jesus, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.
3. FOLLOW Jesus.
Matthew 9:9, As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me.” And he rose and followed Him.
PAUSE: Can you point to the moment that you began to fully follow Jesus?
Memory Verse: Choose one and share with your group.
Luke 14:33, So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be My disciple.
NEXT STEP
- Evangelism is not a transaction, it is a TRANSFORMATION ...
- Repent of times we CHEAPENED God’s grace ...
- Commit to counting the COST of being a follower of Jesus ...
