Jesus' Model Prayer

Series: Prayers from the Bible

September 04, 2022
Frank Foreman

We start up a short series of messages this Sunday, covering some of the important prayers in the Bible. Some are prayed in desperation, others are prayed with accepting faith, but they all serve a purpose beyond the original intent... they serve as a teaching tool for our understanding. ---------- This Sunday, Frank starts with the Lord's Prayer; those words uttered to His disciples who wanted to be more effecting in prayer and thus, as Him to teach them such effective prayer.

Episode Notes

Matthew 6:5-15, And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Pray then like this: Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

BIG IDEA:  Prayer is not an attempt to bend the will of God to what I want... Prayer is to bend me to fit the will of God.

1.  God’s glory:

Verses 9-10, Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

  • God is Father.

Galatias 4:4-7, But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

  • God is King.

Psalm 24:7-10, Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.

  • God is Master.

Matthew 6:24, No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

2.  My need:

Verses 11-13, Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  • The Father provides.

Matthew 6:25-26, Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

  • The King pardons.

Psalm 103:11-12, For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgressions from us.

  • The Master protects.

2nd Timothy 4:16-18, At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into His Heavenly Kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

NEXT STEP:  Pray through the elements of the Lord’s Prayer, bending to God’s will.. Worship, trust, request, confession, submission.

1st John 5:14, And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us.
