Hearing & Doing
Series: Authentic Faith

Who has ever heard a guy utter those famous words, "Instructions? I don't need to follow instructions. I got this!" Admittedly, there are some of the more mechanically inclined among us that can pull that off, but for the most part, that is a daunting challenge for the rest of us. We're always the ones with the "extra" parts left over when our project is completed. ---------- In the message this Sunday, Frank will focus on the section of James one where we are urged to not only be hearers of the Word, but doers of it as well. But we would be remiss if we didn't remember that at the beginning of this section, James says, "...let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak..." The message is that we are not to be lethargic or indifferent in our obedient action, but it is just as important to "follow the instructions" given so we know how we are to act in accordance to God's Word.
Big Idea: Most religious people of Jesus’ day were content to hear God’s Word read without a mature desire to fully obey… Be hearers and doers.
1. Maturing faith receives God’s Word.
(Journal) James 1:19-21
- Receive with submission.
- Receive with purity.
- Receive with humility.
John 8:31, So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My Word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
2. Maturing faith applies God’s Word.
(Journal) James 1:22-27
- Apply with sincerity.
- Apply with generosity.
- Apply with conviction.
Romans 6:17-18, But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
Next Step: My maturing faith will be reflected in my obedience to God’s Word.
