Grow Spiritually

Series: Church on Purpose

July 05, 2020
Frank Foreman

This Sunday, Frank Foreman concludes our current sermon series, "Church on Purpose," a preaching series that reminds us how important it is to look back to the early church and to the word of God to find out God's will and purpose for us individually as Christians and collectively as a church family. ------------- In this final week, Frank goes one more time to the book of Matthew and looks again to the Great Commission in Matthew 28. In so doing, we will together study the purpose we have as a church family to commit ourselves to discipleship, as we continue to strive together to grow to maturity in Jesus Christ.

Episode Notes

Matthew 28:19-20, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

BIG IDEA:

Discipleship means to “GROW SPIRITUALLY”... Through discipleship we MATURE God’s people.

Hebrews 6:1, Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity...

2nd Peter 3:18, But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

  • Growing spiritually is a PROCESS.
  • Growing spiritually takes DISCIPLINE.

The key to discipleship is reading God’s Word and acting on what you read:

2 Timothy 3:16-17, All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

1.  John Bunyan  (1660)

Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

God will EQUIP you to do what He CALLS you to do.

2.  Horatio G. Spafford  (1873)

Philippians 4:7, And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God will grant you PEACE in the midst of GRIEF.

3.  Elisabeth Elliot  (1956)

Acts 1:8, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

God will provide OPPORTUNITIES for those who intentionally SEEK.

NEXT STEP:

ABIDE in God’s Word...  Do not pick and choose select favorites...

It takes the whole Bible to grow a whole Christian.

John 8:31-32, So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My Word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

  • Be ready and EAGER to hear God.

Matthew 11:15, He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  • Deal with SIN that prevents hearing God.

James 1:21, Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls.

  • Take NOTES on what you hear.

Hebrews 2:1, Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

  • ACT on what you hear.

James 1:22, But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

A.W. Tozer, “If I look to the world, I will conform to the ways of the world.  If I look at the Word, I will conform to the will of God.”

Memory Verse:

Matthew 22:37-39, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 28:19-20, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
