God Visits Calvary

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

March 28, 2021
Frank Foreman

Did you ever get in trouble for something you didn't do? You took the blame even though you we're the one who did something wrong. You endured the consequences of punishment for someone else's error. ---------- This Sunday, Frank begins our new sermon series over the book of Mark by starting at the end of the book in Mark 15. Together we will look a a familiar story--a story of our grace purchased by Christ on the cross--and perhaps see the events of that story in a way we haven't considered.

Episode Notes

Mark 15:33-39

Big Idea:  God came to Calvary not to protect His Son from evildoers but to punish His Son on their behalf.

1.  At Calvary Jesus experienced the Father’s abandonment.

John 17:22, The glory that You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one even as We are one...

John 1:1-2, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

John 1:3, All things were made through Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

Genesis 1:2, The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:26, Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.”

Isaiah 53:4-5, Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.

2.  At Calvary Jesus experienced the Father’s wrath.

Psalm 5:4, For You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with You.

Isaiah 59:2, ...but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.

2nd Corinthians 11:3, But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Galatians 6:7, Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Romans 5:8-9, ...but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God.

1st Peter 2:24, He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.

3.  At Calvary Jesus experienced the Father’s judgement.

Colossians 2:14, ...by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This He set aside, nailing it to the cross.

John 3:18-19, Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light because their works were evil.

Acts 9:16, And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on His name.

2nd Corinthians 5:21, For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Verse 33, And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.  (Noon - 3PM)

The darkness at Calvary did not represent the absence of God but His holy and terrifying presence.

Joel 2:10, The earth quakes before them; the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.

Verse 39, And when the centurion, who stood facing Him, saw that in this way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

Even the worst sinners are not beyond the reach of God’s undeserved love and grace.

Next Step:  Hate the sin that sent Jesus to Calvary.

Romans 12:9, Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
