Where in the U.S. would you least like to live? For the Hebrews, the place they would have despised the most was Babylon (Iraq)
DANIEL:
The book covers the entire Babylonian captivity (605-536 B.C. (including Rack, Shack, and Benny)
Question: what does it take to be a man? The worldly view is sex, drinking, a good job, college graduate.
Israel was defeated and carried off (700 miles) and were chosen to serve a king (dreams). They (Daniel, Shadrach, Meshech, and Abednego) were indoctrinated at Babylon University:
- Request was made to not eat the king’s food
- Refused to bow down to a false idol (fiery furnace)
- Refused to cease praying (lion’s den)
Were these guys “real men?”
- Castrated
- Water
- Slaves
- Learned
What did they have? God and a few good friends.
LESSON: Show me your friends and I will show you your future ... Truth is, this is not just for kids!
Proverbs 17:17, A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 13:20, Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Proverbs 27:17, Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
