Final Authority

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

Jesus never had a question about His own authority. It was never in doubt in His mind. He was sent by the Father with full authority. Of course, the religious leaders of the day were constantly questioning His authority to teach, to heal, to forgive sin, etc. Oftentimes, they would question Him about these things in an effort to trap Him in His own words. They often came away frustrated. ---------- Such is the case with this week's passage as they once again probe Him, searching for any means possible to entrap Him. However, it is clear that with His time becoming short, He doesn't have the time to deal with such things. Thus, He dismisses their queries, primarily because He truly did have the authority to do so.

Episode Notes

Big Idea: Jesus’ authority is infinite and absolute….

And is always in perfect agreement with the will of the Father.

1.  The Confrontation:  Religious leaders were desperate to discredit Jesus.

(Journal) Mark 11:27-28

Acts 17:5, But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd.

2.  The Counter:  Jesus answered their question with a question.

(Journal) Mark 11:29-33a

Luke 7:28-30, I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.” (When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

3.  The Condemnation:  Jesus ended attempts to communicate with them.

(Journal) Mark 11:33b

John 12:35, So Jesus said to them, “The Light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the Light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

Titus 2:15, Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Next Step:  Confidently proclaim God’s revealed truth with authority.

Romans 10:14, How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
