This week, we look together at Peter's solemn warnings about false teachers that will come in to take advantage of young and/or naive Christians. It is vital for us to consistently return to the Word of God as our source of truth, to Christ as our standard of righteousness, and to grace as our only hope for salvation.

Episode Notes

BIG IDEA:

Be warned... Destruction awaits false teachers and those who follow them.

1.  False teacher are deceptive.  (2:1–3)

Jude 1:4, For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

  • Denying the lordship of Jesus while claiming to be a believer infects other people and discredits the Gospel.

2.  False teachers are doomed.  (2:4–10a)

2nd Thessalonians 1:7-9, ...when the Lord Jesus is revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might...

  • God sent a message to all generations that wickedness results in judgment.

3.  False teachers are disdainful.  (2:10b–17)

Ephesians 5:27, ...so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

  • False teachers prey on the weak, unstable, and young in the faith.

4.  False teachers are devastating.  (2:18–22)

Hebrews 6:4-6, For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

  • False teachers can’t deliver the freedom they promise because they are enslaved to corruption.

NEXT STEP:

No Church / Christian is immune to false teachers...

    • Be grounded in the knowledge of Christ.  (1:8)
    • Submit to Christ’s standard for morality.  (2:2)
    • Repent and be delivered.  (2:9)

Memory Verse:  2nd Peter 2:22, What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
