Compassionate King
Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained
May 02, 2021
Frank Foreman
This Sunday, Frank concludes the first chapter of Mark in our ongoing series from the book of Mark. Jesus understood His purpose, to share the Gospel and teach the message of His kingdom and God's will. Yet, in the midst of focus, He also acted with compassion, helping and heading many people, but He never lost His primary motivation from God, to lead people to turn back to the Father.
Episode Notes
BIG IDEA: The world has been devastated by sin... Our compassionate King has total power over both the physical and spiritual effects of sin.
1. The proof of His person - Mark 1:29-34
Luke 4:39, And He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
Isaiah 53:4-5, Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed.
- Jesus performed miracles of compassion to affirm the true Gospel and to validate His claim to be the messianic King, the Son of God, and the Savior of the world.
2. The power of His action - Mark 1:35
Matthew 26:39, And going a little farther He fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
Matthew 6:9-10, Pray then like this: “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.”
- Jesus’ prayer life was an essential part of His obedience and submission, and showed that He relied fully on the plan of the Father and the power of the Spirit.
3. The priority of His mission - Mark 1:36-39
Luke 5:32, And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Romans 10:13-15, For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News!”
- Jesus’ ultimate purpose was not to deliver people from temporary illness but to save them from sin and eternal judgment.
NEXT STEP: In sickness and in health show compassion and glorify God.
