Afraid of the Dark or Lost in the Dark

Series: I AM

April 26, 2020
Frank Foreman

Frank Foreman this series of messages based on the seven affirmative statements Jesus makes about Himself in the Gospel of John. He begins each of these unique with the statement "I Am." Of course, this was not simply a general statement of His attributes. It tied directly to the personal name of God from the Old Testament (I Am that I Am). In each of these statements, He profoundly ties His characteristics to the Father and declares His divine nature.

Episode Notes

John 1:1-9

PAUSE/CONSIDER:  Tell about a time you’ve seen a lighthouse up close...  What is the lighthouse’s purpose?

John 8:12, Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

1.  The Light reveals our actions.

John 3:19-21, And this is the judgment: the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the Light and does not come to the Light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the Light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

Romans 5:8, ...but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Matthew 5:14-16, You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.

2.  The Light guides our way.

John 11:10, But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the Light is not in him.

Psalm 119:105, Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a Light to my path.

3.  The Light exposes our dangers.

John 12:35-36, So Jesus said to them, “The Light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the Light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the Light, believe in the Light, that you may become sons of Light.”

Ephesians 6:12, For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

PAUSE/CONSIDER:  Can you think of an additional purpose of a lighthouse?

BIG IDEA:

We have every reason to be afraid of the dark and embrace the Light ... Follow Jesus and let His Light shine through you.

Acts 26:18, I am sending you to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to Light and from the power of satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.

NEXT STEP:

  • Pray for your eyes to be open.
  • Turn from darkness to Light.
  • Receive forgiveness of sins.

Ask God to send you as a carrier of His Light.
