Second Nature: Cultivating Spiritual Disciplines

Series: Second Nature

February 19, 2018
Rev. Jason Gaskin

Spiritual disciplines don't just happen. We don't just wake up each morning and feel like praying. It doesn't work that way. Spiritual disciplines or practices take intentionality. Even if you do wake up in the morning desiring to pray... it came out of years of practice. So why practice? From a sports point of view... practicing makes you more successful at beating your opponent. It strengthens and prepares one for success. It does not assume that the game will be easy but assumes that victory in a hard-fought battle is sweet. We know that life carries sweet and difficult moments. This is not news to us. We also know that difficult moments have the ability to shape us for the good and the bad. How we are shaped by difficult moments doesn't just happen... it shouldn't be a surprise. We pray, fast, read scripture, fellowship, tithe, serve others in good times as a practice. We know that there will be a day when will need stand on those practices. Jesus when he fasted for forty days and forty nights was tempted by the devil. The devil tempted Jesus, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But Jesus answered, "One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God." I hope you might receive this Lenten season as a gift. That you might live deeper into some spiritual practices that we will be talking about in the next few weeks. So that when life gets difficult... we might live on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
