Episode Notes

THE TRUTH: JESUS BECAME “ONE OF US” - AND IT’S A BIG DEAL!

The Word became a human being and lived here with us. (John 1:14 - CEV)

God sent his own Son in a human body like ours . . . (Romans 8:3 - LB)

Jesus gave up his place with God and made himself nothing. He was born as a man and became like a servant. And when he was living as a human being, he humbled himself . . . even when it caused his death. (Philippians 2:7-8 - EXB)

One of the earliest “controversies” the church faced was ________________

(This is the belief that Jesus was God but not really a true human being)

Jesus was not God merely “indwelling” a man for a season. Jesus was not a man who “became” God. Jesus was not God only “appearing” to be a man. Jesus was not “partially” man. Jesus was 100% human 100% of the time.

One of the surest “tests” for discerning truth is affirming Jesus’ __________

The way to find out if a message is from the Holy Spirit is to ask: “Does it really agree that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, actually became a man with a human body?” If so, then the message is from God. (1 John 4:2 - LB)

There are a lot of smooth-talking charlatans loose in the world who refuse to believe that Jesus Christ was truly human, a flesh-and-blood human being. Give them their true title: Deceiver! Antichrist! (2 John 7 - Msg)

 JESUS WAS A “R - E - A - L” HUMAN BEING

Since all his “children” have flesh and blood, Jesus became human to fully identify with us. He did this, so that he could experience death . . .  This is why he had to be a man and take hold of our humanity in every way.  (Hebrews 2:14, 17 - TPT)

Since we are all creatures of flesh and blood, Jesus took on flesh and blood, so that by dying He could destroy the one who held power over death . . . He had to become as human as His sisters and brothers . . . (Hebrews 2:14, 17 - Voice)

Since we are human beings—made of flesh and blood—he became flesh and blood too by being born in human form; for only as a human being could he die . . . We all know he did not come as an angel but as a human being—yes, it was necessary for Jesus to be like us. (Hebrews 2:14, 17 - LB)

 As a human being, Jesus was . . .

Jesus took a human body to save our bodies. He took a human mind to save our minds. Without becoming man in his emotions, he could not have rescued our hearts. And without taking a human will, he could not save our broken and wandering wills. In the words of St. Gregory: “That which he has not assumed he cannot heal.” He became man completely, so that he might understand us completely and save us completely.

WHY BEING “ONE OF US” MATTERS: 4 WAYS HIS LIFE IMPACTS OURS

 Jesus experienced real ____________________________________________

He had to be one of us, so that he could serve God as our merciful and faithful high priest . . . And now that Jesus has suffered and was tempted, he can help anyone else who is tempted. (Hebrews 2:17-18 - LB)

Jesus, our high priest, is able to understand our weaknesses. When Jesus lived on earth, he was tempted in every way. He was tempted in the same ways we are tempted, but he never sinned. (Hebrews 4:15- ETRV)

 Jesus understands your struggles!

 Jesus felt real _____________________________________________________

Tears streamed down Jesus’ face. (John 11:35 - TPT)

He was in such agony of spirit that he broke into a sweat of blood, with great drops falling to the ground as he prayed.

(Luke 22:44- LB)

Jesus, deeply hurt as he sensed their inhumanity, looked around in anger at the faces surrounding him. (Mark 3:5 - Ph)

 Jesus understands your feelings!

 Jesus suffered with real ____________________________________________

It was our pains he carried— our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us. We thought he brought it on himself, that God was punishing him for his own failures. But it was our sins that did that to him, that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins! He took the punishment, and that made us whole. Through his bruises we get healed . . . Still, it’s what God had in mind all along, to crush him with pain. (Isaiah 53:5, 10 - Msg)

 Jesus understands your suffering!
