    Sermon06142020-"Depth Over Distance"

Many years ago, I went out for a jog. I ran down the sidewalk in front of our house to our local park. From there, I began jogging down a trail inside of the park.

I jogged along the trail for a while, but realized I was in unfamiliar territory. I was not really worried, thinking that all that I needed to do was to turnaround and retrace my steps.

Soon, my jog turned into a walk. I noticed some houses and a nearby street. I decided to abandon the trail, fully believing I now knew my surroundings.

It did not take me too long to figure out that I had no idea where I was. I also wondered how I could have possibly become lost so quickly.

My phone was in my pocket. All that I needed to do was make one phone call and Jenna would have immediately come to pick me up.

But, some of us have to do things the hard way. Some of us can be a little hard-headed. Some of us can be pretty stubborn.

I pressed on, believing that any moment I would become familiar with my location. I kept walking and walking. It had been hours since I set out for my early morning run.

Reluctantly, when I realized just how lost I was, I called Jenna. Through additional walking down some main roads, we were finally able to determine my location. 20 minutes later, Jenna was there to pick me up.

Eventually, I was able to determine that I had wandered six miles away from our home. It did not look that far on a map, but I felt very far away.

Maybe you have had a similar experience. We start out thinking we know we are and we know where we are going. We run into some circumstances and places that we did not intend, but we think that we are still in control. We think we still have this. We think we can turn around at any time and retrace out steps. We think that eventually we will find our way.

Yet, as time continues, we wonder if we have gone too far. We wonder if we can even find our way. We wonder if we are too late.

This coming Sunday, we will be continuing our “Comeback” Teaching Series with a sermon entitled “Depth Over Distance”.

Please join us this coming Sunday in person at 9:30 am. or 11:00 am. Or, join us on Facebook Live at 11:00 am.

It’s not too late and you are never too far away.
