The church at Philippi was no different than many churches today. There were nationality differences (Asian, Greek, and Roman). There were socio-economic differences (some were rich like Lydia, others were middle class like the jailor and most were poor) and there were generational differences. These differences could easily lead to misunderstandings and a lack of trust.

How were they supposed to maintain unity? There was only one way and that was if Paul could convince them that whatever united them was greater than all that divided them. To move beyond their differences they had to have a common bond and a common purpose.
