Homily - Things We Take For Granted (TGM)

For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.

(Matthew 8:35)

HE WAS ADDICTED to the big screen, in a time when only movie theaters had them;

AND, SO ON ANY GIVEN SUNDAY morning, he was more likely to be found in somewhat cool auditorium of a movie house than in any other place;

AND SO, SINCE HE WOULDN’T come to Church, the Lord met him on the big screen;

AFTER WATCHING A BILLY GRAHAM film in a make-shift movie theater, he gave his life to Christ....

AND, THE REST IS HISTORY! THE REST IS MY HISTORY!

HE BOUGHT MORE and BIGGER station wagons and buses than our family needed...

  • And because of this many poor children heard the Name of Jesus than otherwise would’ve!

FROM MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY he worked tirelessly so that he could have...

  • SATURDAY’S free for family days frolicking at the beach or playing Rounders in the shadows of Fort Clifford;

And so that...

  • SUNDAY MORNINGS could be reserved for worship, and for instruction in the Christian Faith;

And...

  • SUNDAY AFTERNOONS could be spent visiting prisoners or delinquent youth or the poor who he had met through his various business adventures;

And so that...

  • SUNDAY EVENINGS could be dedicated to the preaching of the Gospel;

HE GOT UP EARLY ON WEEKDAYS...

  • TO READ THE BIBLE and PRAY with children before school, and got home in time for dinner — which almost always began with Bible reading — and always with prayer;

HE WAS A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN, and so many young men would seek him out as they considered starting businesses of his own...

  • AND, HE WOULD DEDICATE whatever time he had — or would use time that he could have used otherwise — to give them counsel...
  • And this: FREE of CHARGE;

WHETHER HE WAS WITH HIS FAMILY at home,

  • or with colleagues or employees on the job,
  • or at Church worshipping God or teaching the faith:
  • HE WAS THE SAME MAN!
  • HE WASN’T PERFECT!
  • There was NO DUPLICITY found in HIM!

I GREW UP THINKING that this was normal; and, until I got to university, I took it for granted that all Christian men were like my father!

I NEVER REALIZED HOW MUCH I had taken for granted my whole life!

What does it profit,my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works?Can his faith save him?
