Homily - No Merely Private Affair! (Bede)

It would be a grave error ... to say that Christ has no authority whatever in civil affairs, since, by virtue of the absolute empire over all creatures committed to him by the Father, all things are in his power.

~ Pope Pius XI, Quas Primas

DEAR FRIENDS:

IN PREVIOUS TIMES, Christian rulers understood that God had entrusted to them the duty to restore all things in Christ!

These kings, rulers and statesman understood and embraced that of which the Psalmist sang:

"Let all the earth fear the Lord: and let all the inhabitants of the world be in awe of Him. For He spoke and they were made: He commanded and they were created."

THEY UNDERSTOOD AND OBEYED what Holy Mother Church taught, when she said:

"The empire of Christ the King includes not only Catholic nations, not only baptized persons who, though of right belonging to the Church, have been led astray by error, or have been cut off from her by schism, but also all those who are outside the Christian faith; so that truly the whole of mankind is subject to the power of Jesus Christ."

  • AND BECAUSE THEY RIGHTLY UNDERSTOOD that true religion was not just a personal matter!
  • THUS THEY WORKED STRENUOUSLY to establish the Social Reign of Jesus Christ!

BECAUSE THEY RECOGNIZED that the King of the Universe had entrusted many talents into their hands — to one five, to another two, and still another one — and that He would return and demand an accounting of them...

That he would reward each according to their work:

For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents...

Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them...

And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying,

‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’

His master said to him,

‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.’

THESE RULERS AND STATESMEN OF OLD also knew that some would not fare well on the day of reckoning:

He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying:

I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’

But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant!

Take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’

UPON HEARING THE TEACHING OF CHRIST, they were certain that true religion was No Merely Private Affair!

O, DEAREST FRIENDS:

LET US PRAY THAT GOD — in his mercy — would grant to us a new generation of such civil rulers!

  • Rulers and political leaders like unto King Saint Stephen of Hungary...
  • Rulers and statesmen who will use the talents entrusted to them until the Social Kingship of Christ is established in all the nations of the world!

King Saint Stephen of Hungary, Confessor of Christ Jesus, and Defender of the Church: Pray for us!

Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, and Lord of all peoples and nations: Have mercy upon us!
