The Most Startling Claim Ever Made, Part 2 LISTEN ON MIXLR @ https://gbcsl.mixlr.com WATCH US ON YOU TUBE LIVE @ http://www.youtube.com/gracechurch-slus/live John 5:17-24 “Speaking of Jesus…it says…He answered them, ‘My Father is working until now and I Myself am working.’ For this reason, therefore, the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him because He not only was breaking the Sabbath was is calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself unless it is something He sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing and the Father will show Him greater works than these so that you will marvel. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so, the Son also gives life to whom He wishes, for not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son, does not honor the Father who sent Him. Truly, truly I say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life and does not come into judgment but is past out of death into life.’”
Episode Notes
I. Defining Jesus
The claim to be equal with God is true, He’s equal to God,
The claim to be equal with God is false, and He knows it.
The claim to be equal with God is false, and He doesn’t know it.
II. Our Lord declares His equality with God six ways
1. He is equal to God in nature.
2. He is equal with God in works
3. He is equal to God in power.
4. He is equal to God in authority
a. Genesis 18:25 says, “God the Father is the judge of all the earth.”
b. John 5:22, “For not even the Father judges anyone but He has given all judgment to the Son.”
5. He is equal to God in Honor
a. John 5:23 So that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son, does not honor the Father who sent Him.
b. John 6:28-9 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent
c. John 15:23, “He who hates Me, hates My Father also.
6. He is equal to God in truth…
a. John 5:24 Truly, truly I say to you, he who hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life.”
b. You escape judgment, you escape eternal death only when you believe what the Father says and what the Son says because they both speak the same truth
c. Hebrews 1:1-4 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
d. Colossians 1:17. “He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.”
