Matthew 5:4—Mourning—Profound sorrow over the state of the soul both individually and for others. Matthew 5:5—Meekness—An accompanying sense of humility. Matthew 5:6—Hunger and Thirst—Recognizing the low state of the soul, it creates a longing for what is holy and righteous. Matthew 5:7—Mercy—An understanding that only mercy of God will save a sinful man and nation. Matthew 5:8—Purity of Heart—A longing that has determined that only when the hunger for holiness has been met will a purity of heart take place. Matthew 5:9—Peacemakers—The natural progression that once conversion has taken place that others have to come to a place of righteousness with God. Matthew 5:10—Reviled—This is the destination that a saint will reach with the world and the devil. The Problem of Pride 1 Peter 5:5-6 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, Luke 14:11 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,[a] and to walk humbly with your God?

To Be Poor In Spirit
Isaiah 57:15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Isaiah 66:2 All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Blessed Are The Beggars
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Now concerning[a] food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up.
How Do I Know If I am Poor in Spirit?
Psalms 131:2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.
(2 Cor. 3:18). 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,[a] are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.[b] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
The Reward Of Beggars
Out of weakness... strength.
We may wear rags down here... in Heaven; white robes.
We may be beggar’s at the gates of rich men down here... in Heaven; peace and rest in the presence of God.
We may be fed like Daniel with pulse and water down here... in Heaven; feasting at the Lord’s Table.
We may drink the water of our tears down here... in Heaven; the wine of redemption.
We may have anxious thoughts down here... in Heaven; comfort of all the ages.
