12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.“ Hebrews 12:1-2


I. Our Focus

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2a).


  1. To fix our eyes on Jesus requires a holy habit of soul.


  1. Christ is the “author and perfecter of our faith.”


  1. He laid the foundation for our faith by his death and resurrection.

  2. He provided the perfect example to follow in that he trusted God perfectly.

  3. He gives us the faith we need when we feel like quitting.


II. Our Example

“Who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame” (Hebrews 12:2b).


  1. Giving up the good to obtain the best. 

  2. Enduring pain to receive a reward.


III. Our Hope

“And sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2c).


5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Eph 2:5-6


Running the Race


Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,


1) The only way to win the race is to keep your eyes on Jesus.

2) When hard times come, don’t start with your circumstances and try to find Jesus. Start with Jesus and then go back to your circumstances.

3) When you feel like giving up, remember that in God’s eyes you are already a winner.


In Christ there is


  • full acceptance, therefore do not doubt him.

  • peace, therefore trust him.

  • life, therefore abide in him.

  • blessing, therefore delight in him.

  • light, therefore follow him.

  • power, therefore wait on him.

  • all truth, therefore learn from him.

  • grace, therefore receive from him.

  • joy, therefore rejoice in him.

  • unlimited wealth, therefore depend on him.

  • strength, therefore lean on him.
