5 Myths of Christmas: We Three Kings

Matthew 2:1-12

The Myth: Three kings from the orient, named Balthazar, Gaspar, and Melchior, visited Jesus the night He was born and worshiped him alongside the shepherds.

The Truth: Wise Men from the East Worshiped Jesus at His Home.

1. The Worship of the Wise Men was Prophetic.

  • Gold: a gift for a king.
  • Frankincense: a gift for God
  • Myrrh: a gift for burial

2. The Worship of the Wise Men was Selfless.

Self-Worship (Herod)

Promotes self

Abuses the Word

May appear sincere but is not
Preserves self at the expense of others

Selfless Worship (Wise Men)

Proclaims the Gospel and promotes Jesus

Trusts the Word

Is truly joyful and expressive

Serves others at the expense of self
