Conquering Temptations

Pastor Nolan Carrier

Many present-day Christians are spiritually tired. They (we) feel that the world’s problems are so great that they (we) can have no realistic impact on the world’s situation. Many have settled into a mode of just existing.

Episode Notes

Introduction: Most new Christians are surprised when they face temptation again. The fact is, temptations may vary as to type and scope, but they will never depart. Ask Joseph. Ask Jesus.

1. Temptations are not sinful.
A. Temptations are not wrong.
Matthew 4:1 – Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

B. Temptations are not a sign of weakness.
I Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

2. Understand the goal of temptations.
Matthew 4:10 – Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.”’

A. To destroy our influence.
B. To ruin our lives.

3. Recognize the power of temptation. Satan is the source of power behind all evil temptations.

4. Claim the victory.
A. Victory through Jesus Christ. Use His name.
B. Victory by using God’s armor.

Ephesians 6:13-18 – 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Conclusion: I Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
